Privacy Policy
Last updated October 12, 2026
The short version
- We collect what it takes to run door-to-door and tabling outreach, and nothing for advertising.
- Canvassers record room numbers and answers, never a name unless the person asks for a follow-up.
- Location sharing only runs while you canvass, keeps only your latest spot, and is deleted when you stop.
- After Election Day, every door record, answer and contact detail is deleted.
- We never sell personal information.
Who we are
Campus Connects is the app campus organizations in Michigan, starting with College Democrats at the University of Michigan, use to talk with students about voting. It was called Campus Canvass until October 2026; the name changed, nothing else did. It is run by Christopher Grove, an individual in Michigan ("we" or "us"), for the campus organization. If a company takes over running the app, this policy moves with it and we will tell you first.
Who this covers
- People who use the app: volunteers, team leads and organizers.
- People canvassers talk with: students at their doors or at a campus table. They never sign in, so this policy explains what is recorded about them and how to have it deleted.
- Visitors to the public pages, like this one.
What we collect from people who use the app
- Your account: your name, your school email address and the account ID from the sign-in you use (school Google, school Microsoft, or a code emailed to you), plus your class year if you add it, your campus, your team and your role. Guest accounts have a name and a guest code.
- Shifts you sign up for, and whether you want reminder emails. Signing up sends you emails about that shift.
- What you do in the app: the doors and tabling conversations you log (place, floor, room, time, outcome and the answers you record), kudos, team messages, help requests and safety alerts.
- When you last had the app open, so organizers can see who is out during a storm.
- Your phone number, only if you are a lead or organizer and add one so teammates can reach you.
- Your location, only if location sharing is on. See Location sharing below.
- Technical information: your sign-in and any doors waiting to send are kept in your browser on your device. Our hosting providers keep short-lived server logs (such as IP address, time and the page requested) to keep the service secure.
What canvassers record about the people they talk with
Canvassers record:
- the building, floor and room number, whether anyone answered, and how many people live in the room;
- answers to the questions the campus asks: whether they plan to vote, their registration status, how they plan to vote, the issues they care about, and the campus organization’s own questions;
- whether they plan to support Democratic candidates, only while organizers have that question’s recording turned on.
Canvassers do not record names. If someone asks for a follow-up (a reminder, help registering, an answer to a question), the canvasser records their first name, their email or phone number, and what they asked for.
We never ask for or store Social Security numbers, driver’s license or state ID numbers, dates of birth, payment information or photos of people.
Location sharing
Location sharing helps leads find their teammates in big buildings and helps organizers keep everyone safe. Here is exactly how it works:
- Organizers decide whether it is available. They can turn it off for everyone, and they choose whether the Share my location box starts checked or unchecked for new volunteers.
- Your device asks first. Nothing is collected unless your browser or phone permission allows it. You can uncheck Share my location at any time, or choose Never share my location.
- Only while you canvass. When sharing is on, the app reads your device’s location from when you start canvassing until you stop, at the interval organizers set (between 15 seconds and 10 minutes).
- Only your latest spot. Each update replaces the one before. We keep no history of where you have been, and your spot is deleted when you stop.
- Who sees it: your team lead and the organizers.
- Never sold, never used for ads, and never shared outside the organizing team, except where the law requires it.
How we use information
- to run outreach: assign floors, avoid knocking the same door twice and show progress;
- to make the follow-ups people asked for;
- to keep volunteers safe during storms and safety alerts;
- to make reports for the organizing team;
- to fix mistakes, provide support, prevent abuse and keep the service secure.
We do not use information for advertising, and we do not build profiles for anyone else.
Who can see what
- Volunteers: their own doors and their team’s floor progress, without names on answers.
- Team leads: their team’s doors and totals, and teammates’ latest locations while they share.
- Organizers: every door record, answers room by room, and follow-up contact details for their own campus only. Opening or downloading contact details is logged with the organizer’s name.
- Statewide staff and owners (for example the Michigan Democratic Party, if it runs the app statewide): totals for each campus, such as how many doors were knocked. Never names, door records, answers or contact details. They sign in with a second step (an authenticator app).
- Us, as operator: only to fix a problem, keep the service secure, or when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- After the election: an organizer ends the season, which deletes every door record and answer, every follow-up and contact detail, shifts and sign-ups and the record of emails about them, team messages, kudos, safety alerts and locations. As a backstop, follow-up contact details delete themselves on December 1, 2026, even if no one ends the season.
- Locations: only your latest spot, deleted when you stop canvassing.
- Removed doors: kept for 30 days so a mistake can be undone, then deleted.
- Accounts: kept after the season so you can sign in next time. If you ask to turn off your account in the app, it is turned off within 2 days. To have it deleted, email us.
How we protect it
Data travels encrypted (HTTPS). Follow-up contact details are encrypted when stored. Who can see what is enforced by the database itself, not just hidden in the app. You can sign out of every device at once, and practice data in test mode is kept apart and deleted when the test ends.
No system is perfect. If a breach affects your information, we will tell you promptly and give the notices the law requires.
Your choices and rights
- People who use the app can update their profile, turn location sharing off, and ask to turn off their account in the app.
- People canvassers talk with can skip any question or say no at the door, and can ask at any time to delete their room’s answers or their follow-up details.
- Anyone can ask what we hold about them, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing [email protected]. We answer within 30 days and never treat you differently for asking.
Answers about voting are sensitive
Whether someone plans to vote, and for whom, is personal. That is why answers are kept with a room number rather than a name, why only organizers see them room by room, why organizers can turn the support question’s recording off, and why everything is deleted after the election.
Children
Campus Connects is built for college students and is not for children under 13. If we learn we have information from a child under 13, we delete it.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we update the date at the top and tell you in the app. If a change affects location, sharing or what is recorded at the door, we ask again before it applies to you.
