Terms of Use
Last updated October 12, 2026
The short version
- Use Campus Connects only for the campus organization’s outreach, honestly and lawfully.
- Respect every no, every building rule and every election law.
- Location sharing is your choice, and you can turn it off at any time.
- The safety buttons are not emergency services. In an emergency, call 911.
- The app is provided as is, and Michigan law governs these terms.
These terms
These terms are an agreement between you and Christopher Grove ("we" or "us"), who runs Campus Connects for College Democrats at the University of Michigan. By signing in, you agree to them and to the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
Who can use it
- Students approved by their campus’s organizers, signing in with their own school account (Google, Microsoft or an emailed code); guests given a code by an organizer; and statewide staff invited by an owner.
- You must be at least 13. If you are under 18, you need permission from a parent or guardian.
- Use only your own account.
Accounts and guest codes
Keep your sign-in and any guest code private, and tell an organizer right away if a phone is lost or a code leaks. You are responsible for what happens on your account. Organizers approve and remove members, and we may turn off accounts that break these terms.
Organizers
Organizers decide who joins, what is asked and how the campus’s data is used, within these terms and the Privacy Policy. They are responsible for following their university’s rules for canvassing and tabling, keeping downloads within the organizing team, and ending the season after Election Day.
Canvass the right way
When you use Campus Connects, you agree to:
- be honest about who you are and which organization you are with;
- leave when someone says no or building staff ask you to, and never return to a room that asked not to be contacted;
- follow the university’s housing, solicitation and tabling rules;
- never intimidate, threaten or pressure anyone about registering or voting;
- never give false or misleading information about when, where or how to vote, and use the verified voting facts in the app;
- never offer or give anything of value in exchange for registering, voting, or voting a certain way;
- never collect, carry or return anyone else’s ballot, and point people to their clerk or the state’s official online tools instead;
- never campaign within 100 feet of a polling place entrance on Election Day;
- record names and contact details only when a person asks for a follow-up;
- keep people’s answers and contact details inside the app and the organizing team, and use them only for this election’s organizing;
- never upload data you do not have the right to use, including university records about students;
- never harass, threaten or post hateful content in messages or notes;
- never try to break, overload, scrape, copy or reverse engineer the app, get around its access rules, or see data you are not allowed to see.
Location features and your consent
Location sharing uses your device’s location. It is collected only when all of these are true: organizers have location sharing turned on; Share my location is checked for you (either you checked it, or organizers set it to start checked and you left it); you are canvassing; and your browser or phone permission allows it.
By checking Share my location, or leaving it checked, you agree that we collect your device’s precise location at the interval organizers set while you canvass, show it to your team lead and the organizers, and use it to coordinate outreach and keep people safe, as the Privacy Policy describes.
You can withdraw this consent at any time by unchecking Share my location, choosing Never share my location, or turning off location permission. Withdrawing does not affect anything collected before.
Safety features are not emergency services
The safety alert and the emergency and campus police numbers in the app are conveniences. They may not work without a signal, and they do not contact police or 911 on their own. Nobody watches alerts around the clock. In an emergency, call 911 directly.
Calls and texts
Contact only people who asked for a follow-up, from your own phone, one message at a time. Stop as soon as someone asks you to, and follow the laws on calls and texts, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Never use app data with autodialers or mass texting tools.
Your content
You keep ownership of the notes and messages you write, and you give us permission to store and show them as needed to run the app. If you send us feedback, we may use it without owing you anything. When you record answers, record them accurately and only with the person’s knowledge, and honor any request to delete them.
Our app and other names
The app, its design and its code belong to us. We give you a limited, revocable permission to use it for the campus organization’s outreach. University names and marks belong to their universities. Campus Connects is not run, endorsed or sponsored by any university.
Other services
The app uses Google and Microsoft sign-in, email delivery by Resend, map data from OpenStreetMap contributors served by OpenFreeMap, and links to official election websites. Their own terms apply, and we are not responsible for them.
Changes and availability
We may change, add or remove features. Saving doors without a signal works on a best-effort basis, so check that everything has sent before you clear your browser or sign out. We may pause the app for maintenance or to stop misuse.
Ending
You can stop using the app at any time and ask to turn off your account. Organizers can remove you, and we may suspend or end access if these terms are broken. Data is then handled as the Privacy Policy describes. The disclaimers and limits below continue after you stop.
Disclaimers
To the extent the law allows, Campus Connects is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy. Voting rules change: always check deadlines and locations with the Michigan Secretary of State or your clerk.
Limits on liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data or profits. Our total liability for any claim about the app is limited to the greater of $100 or what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
If you misuse the app
If your misuse of the app, or your breaking of these terms or the law, leads to a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable costs from that claim, to the extent the law allows.
Michigan law and disputes
Michigan law governs these terms, along with federal law where it applies, without regard to conflict of law rules. If you have a problem, contact us first and give us 30 days to try to fix it. After that, any dispute goes to the state courts in Washtenaw County, Michigan, or the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Either of us may use small claims court instead.
General
These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement about the app. If a court finds part of them unenforceable, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term is not a waiver. We may transfer these terms to a company we form or another operator, and we will tell you if we do.
Changes to these terms
When we change these terms, we update the date and tell you in the app. Using the app after that means you accept the change. For important changes, we ask you to agree again.
